Abstract
Organizational commitment has been shown to be related to turnover rate, absenteeism, job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behaviors (Igbaria, Meredith & Smith, 1994; Porter, Steers & Mowday, 1974; Shore & Wayne, 1993; Steers, 1977). With part-time employment on the rise, it is important to consider whether part-time employees are as committed to the organization and its goals as their full-time counterparts. The present study focuses on differences in the level of organizational commitment of full-and part-time employees. Participants were from a retail store in South Central Kansas. Participants completed a survey that consisted of the short form of the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire, a IS-item Organizational Commitment Questionnaire, an 8-item Continuance Commitment Scale and demographics. Data were analyzed using t-tests and 2 X 2 Analysis of Variances. Results indicate there are significant differences in the level of organizational commitment of full-and part-time employees. Implications are discussed.
